Looking for meaningful work in the outdoors? The Mount Hermon After School Adventures ("ASA") program may be the perfect fit!

 

At ASA, we believe that at the end of a long school day, students need space to run, play and get dirty! ASA Field Guides lead a small group of students in the outdoors, facilitate games and activities and create a fun space for students to explore and play outside. Most importantly, ASA Field Guides create a safe environment and guide students into loving relationships with each other and God. You can expect to work several days per week during the afternoon hours (generally 2-6pm) and be part of a supportive team. Applicants must have prior experience working with children, a fun-loving heart, and a flexible attitude. On any given day you may skip rocks at the creek, facilitate our roped tree climbing activity, or participate in a game of hide and seek in the redwood forest. No two days are ever the same!

 

The ASA  is a Ministerial position. Ministerial staff render their work, stewardship, relationships and behavior as evidence of being followers of Jesus Christ while embracing and affirming Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s (“MHA”) Christian mission, vision, beliefs and standards of conduct. They are responsible for defining, cultivating and leading MHA’s Christian community, conference programs, and retreats. All staff join into our community life of prayer, worship and spiritual activity, including but not limited to staff meetings, attendance at programs, Bible Study, and staff gatherings.

Position Objective:

 

The After School Adventures ("ASA") Field Guide is responsible for implementing faith-based and nature-based after school care programs in a manner consistent with MHA’s mission, vision and values.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

 

  • Facilitate a faith-based program and a nature-based program for school-aged children 1st – 5th grade.
  • Teach students program materials, games, and crafts.
  • Collect and plan needed supplies for activities.
  • Facilitate challenge course and climbing wall and all nature activities.
  • Oversee safety and health compliance for care of children.
  • Communicate with parents about their child.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Certifications:

 

  • High-school diploma.
  • Some early childhood education desirable.
  • CPR and First Aid certified (must be aquired before employment begins).

Work Experience:

  • Experience working with school-aged children.
  • Experience working in an outdoor setting.
  • Familiar with local public school system and area.
  • Experience connecting faith to nature context.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development at various stages.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team exercising good judgment and decision-making.
  • Must be a punctual and responsible individual.
  • Must exhibit great interpersonal skills with people of all ages.
  • Must be observant and attentive.
  • Mature understanding and respect for authority and peers, as well as camp guidelines and principles.
  • Ability to engage in active listening.
  • Ability to engage in a variety of outdoor activities.
  • A heart to serve whenever needed.
  • Must be able to lead and teach with patience and clear instruction.

Physical Demands:

 

Ability to hike at least 2 miles and play strenuous games. The physical environment requires the employee to have the ability to hike at least 2 miles and play strenuous games, work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Requires sitting, standing, squatting, stooping, twisting, and hiking.

Additional Requirements

  • Adherence to company dress code and professional standards for personal grooming and appearance.
  • Satisfactory completion of background investigation, or valid work permit, as well as ability to provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
