Overview

Casual Part-Time 0-30 hours weekly

 

Position Objective:

The Mount Hermon Beach Lifeguard is responsible for minimizing risk and facilitating positive surf experiences for junior high and high school campers throughout the summer (and on occasion in the fall) in order to provide them with an opportunity to interact with God’s creation and cultivate physical, spiritual, and emotional growth.

 

Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Perform the certified beach lifeguard activities while working at Mount Hermon in a professional and productive manner.
  • Care for injured individuals as a first responder.
  • Create a positive environment by minimizing emotional, physical, and spiritual risk for both guests and staff.
  • Interact with campers in a way that supports Mount Hermon’s mission and vision.
  • Assist with transportation of campers from Ponderosa Lodge to the beach and back as well as thoroughly cleaning and preparing the surf equipment and trailer for the next activity at the end of each activity as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

  • This position does not supervise employees or volunteers.

 

 

Qualifications

General Qualifications:

 

Ability to respect the Mount Hermon Association, Inc.’s mission, vision, values and statement of beliefs.  Of strong moral character and integrity.

 

Education/Certifications/Licenses:

 

  • Current Beach Lifeguard Certification
  • Current CPR, AED, First Aid certifications
  • Current Driver’s License
  • College degree preferred but not required

Work Experience:

 

  • Experience instructing others how to surf preferred but not required.
  • Experience and desire to work within a positive team setting with diverse people.
  • At least once summer working as a beach guard preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Must be comfortable in the ocean.
  • Knowledge of surf safety and ability to explain and demonstrate to others.
  • Comfort driving a 10 passenger van with a trailer attached.
  • Exhibits great communication and interactions with staff and guests; possessing the ability to respond to both with courtesy.
  • Mature understanding and respect for authority and peers, as well as camp guidelines and principles.
  • Ability to work with a team with good judgment and decision making abilities.
  • Punctual and responsible.
  • Absolute attention to detail and safety.
  • Positive attitude that will provide guest satisfaction with all programs.

Key Job Accountabilities

Physical Demands:

 

  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • The employee is frequently required to run, swim, stand, sit for long periods and use steep trails and stairs.
  • The employee is frequently required climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl.
  • The physical environment requires the employee to talk and hear both in person from close and long distances and by phone or radio.
  • The employee may be required to lift, push or pull persons or equipment over 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Requirements: 

  • Ability to work early mornings and some weekends.
  • Adherence to the basic principles as expressed in Mount Hermon’s Mission, Vision, Values and Commitment statements.
